Haiku
Jeanne Powell

                      I
twin towers blasted
from that Big Apple skyline
innocence has fled

              II
Afghani winters
for invaders seeking spoils
decades of defeat

                      III
a crimson sunset
night fires burning til dawn
Afghanistan bleeds

              IV
brilliant red poppies
adorn the freshly turned earth
home is the warrior

                      V
wide young eyes harvest grief
etched in a widow's gaze
the last full measure

Jeanne Powell has published three collections of poetry - February Voices, Cadences, and Tangerine Dance. She runs three poetry reading series in San Francisco.
