Biber's Mystery Sonata No. 16 "Passacaglia"

Peter Campbell-Kelly

Artist's Note:

This is a sort of musical prayer, intended for the well-being of all of us, in this desperately difficult pandemic. I also wrote this poem to go with the performance:

# Passacaglia

Our songs of sadness touch
the dry-deep scars of earth

And on this peaty path
a lichened branch
Cuts clean through the heart

And people lie dying
And people die weeping

And the waters ripple slow
And the sun lasts down and down

And the curlew throws free
Her liturgy of fiery love

Peter Campbell-Kelly: Passacaglia

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was a Bohemian-Austrian composer and violinist active in the late 17th century. He was one of the most important composers for the violin in the history of the instrument. His technique allowed him to employ multiple stops in intricate polyphonic passages and explore the various possibilities of scordatura tuning. Among other pieces, Biber wrote operas, sacred music, and music for chamber ensemble. He also wrote one of the earliest known pieces for solo violin, the monumental passacaglia of the Mystery Sonatas.

Peter Campbell-Kelly is Section Leader Second Violin for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO). He has appeared as a soloist in the BBC Proms with both the BBC Philharmonic and the RNS and at Le Châtelet in Paris with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO). He also led many concerts with the Royal Northern Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble including a tour of Japan in 2008. With the Leda Trio, he also released a CD of 18th Century Violin Sonatas. In his spare time Peter and his wife Kate, a pianist, enjoy pottering around the garden, usually accompanied by their four enormous green-pawed Maine Coon cats.
